10-26-2008 – We Are Not Fanatics – Various

¥ - There used to be a preacher who came to Penn Campus called BROTHER STEVEN. He would preach that people are going to hell and that they need Jesus. I recently found an article about him from George Washington University. He went down there to preach. This is what it talked about…

About 100 GW students gathered in front of J Street to witness a spectacle that could become a regular occurrence on campus, University of Pennsylvania students said. Brother Steven, a self-proclaimed born-again Christian, clutched a Bible and preached that college students who drink, smoke marijuana or sleep more than 10 hours a night are all sinners who will go to hell.

He was just funny at first, saying random stuff, while Brother Steven fended off verbal attacks from students. But then, Brother Steven verbally attacked Jews, Catholics, Hindus, minorities, homosexuals and anyone who does not fit his description of a born-again Christian. “Stop getting wasted…stop masturbating…I’m a saint. Who else here is a saint?” Now everyone has become confrontational, creating chaos.

Brother Steven also spoke out against homosexuals. “Gays and lesbians are worse than minorities because they choose to be sinners,” he said. “If you really love your homo friends, you’ll tell your homo friends, ‘Stop doing it,’” Brother Steven said.

Sophomore Jon Ziegler said he was turned off by Brother Steven’s message because he damages the religion that he claims to promote. “If I was someone who was looking for direction, and I saw that, it would completely turn me off from Christianity.”

Unfortunately THIS is often the IMAGE people have of CHRISTIANS.

¥ - Michele is part of a TWINS CLUB where she was talking with someone and mentioned that I was a PASTOR.

The main ASSOCIATION that she had about Christians…especially REALLY religious people like PASTORS… are that they are FANATICS. That’s what she thought they were all like.

They are WEIRD…not NORMAL…

They shove the BIBLE down my throat…

They JUDGE everything I do…

They CONDEMN me and tell me I have to GET SAVED…

They PICKET ABORTION clinics and GAY PRIDE parades…

This is what people think about CHRISTIANS.

After 9/11 however, being a FANATIC is now not just associated with ABRASIVENESS but also with VIOLENCE…WAR.

For the sake of their GOD they will KILL...start WARS…HIJACK planes…

Tim Keller in his book “The Reason For God” talks about this stating that one of the greatest ROADBLOCKS that Seekers have towards the Church is their view of Christians as FANATICS.

Keller quotes Christopher Hitchens, the author of the book “God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything”. Hitchens has a chapter in his book entitled “Religion Kills” and he gives accounts of religion-fueled violence in Belfast, Beirut, Bombay, Belgrade, Bethlehem and Baghdad.

Hitchens – “Religion is not unlike racism. Religion has been an enormous multiplier of tribal suspicion and hatred.”

Keller agrees with this statement. Religion has been the cause of a great deal of Violence…

“Religion ‘transcendentalizes’ ordinary cultural differences so that parties feel they are in a cosmic battle between good and evil. Christian nations institutionalized imperialism, violence, and oppression through the Inquisition and the African slave trade. Islam is the soil for much of today’s terrorism, while Israeli forces have often been ruthless too. Hindu nationalists, in the name of their religion, carry out bloody strikes on both Christian churches and Muslim mosques.”

We live in a time where RELIGION has become SYNONYMOUS with either VIOLENT RELIGIOUS EXTREMISTS who KILL without Conscience…or…RIGHT-WING FUNDAMENTALISTS who PICKET & CONDEMN without Conscience.

This has become one of the biggest reasons for why Seekers do not want to become Christians.

Keller gives his REBUTTAL to their Criticisms…

1. (Interesting but not what I want to focus on…)

The problem with this view is that the “Communist Russian, Chinese, and Cambodian regimes of the twentieth century rejected all organized religion and belief of God. These societies were all rational and secular, yet they each produced massive violence against its own people without the influence of religion. Why? Allister McGrath points out that when the idea of God is gone, a society will “transcendentalize” something else, some other concept, in order to appear morally and spiritually superior. The Marxists made the State into such an absolute, while the Nazis did it to race and blood.”

The problem is NOT that RELIGION causes people to be VIOLENT & HATEFUL, but that MAN is VIOLENT and HATEFUL already. Religion is simply one of the things that they ABUSE and USE for their own AGENDA.

Fanaticism should not lead us to hate religion but to see that MAN is DEPRAVED. We are ENSLAVED by our SIN. We FALL SHORT and thus are in need of a SAVIOR. Apart from CHRIST we have NO HOPE.

2.

Keller also notes (what we want to focus on…) that when Seekers think about Religious people they place them on a

SPECTRUM where it goes from NOMINAL (Can’t believe they’re Christian) to FANATIC.

But the problem is that FANATICS are not the other extreme of NOMINAL Christians.

Think of people you consider fanatical. They’re overbearing, self-righteous, opinionated, insensitive and harsh? Why? It’s not because they are too Christian but because they are not Christian enough. They are fanatically zealous and courageous, but they are not fanatically humble, sensitive, loving, empathetic, forgiving or understanding – as Christ was.… What strikes us as overly fanatical is actually a failure to be fully committed to Christ and his gospel.

People do not understand that what they PERCEIVE to be CHRISTIANITY is not TRUE CHRISTIANITY at all.

Biblically the SPECTRUM would be NOMINAL to CHRIST-LIKE. Fanatics would be closer to the side of people who DO NOT UNDERSTAND who Christ is.

Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven….5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth….7Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy….9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

This verse is the OPPOSITE of what a FANATIC would look like.

Matthew 9:10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" 12 On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

Jesus doesn’t go and CONDEMN these “sinners” – and they WERE SINNERS – but rather he eats with them and shows them MERCY.

In this story it’s the PHARISEES who act more like RELIGIOUS FANATICS. There’s NO GRACE! There’s NO COMPASSION!

John 13:2 …the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus…4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

This is NOT a picture of a FANATIC. The picture of Jesus here is one of a SERVANT. Those who were his ENEMY he SERVED and LOVED.

Fanatics feel that they are PASSIONATE for Christ, but their Christ is NOT the one we see in the BIBLE.

¥ - Michele continued to share with this woman and said that my passions are for Mercy & Justice and she was SHOCKED. She didn’t think that Christians CARED about these kinds of things.

All they want is to CONVERT PEOPLE. All they want is to JUDGE PEOPLE.

How SAD it was to hear that this woman was SHOCKED that Christians were actually LOVING & COMPASSIONATE…that we care about the POOR and OPPRESSED.

2 Corinthians 5:18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God.

We are the AMBASSADOR’S…the REPRESENTATION…of CHRIST.

The MESSAGE we are to bring to this world with BOTH our WORDS & DEEDS is not of CONDEMNATION and JUDGMENT. It’s the message of RECONCILIATION…God’s GRACIOUS OFFER!!!!

The FOCUS of the message is RE-ESTABLISHING PEACE…being RE-UNITED…EXPERIENCING GOD’S LOVE!!!!!

People need to SEE that on the OTHER END OF THE SPECTRUM are not FANATICS but Christians who are GRACIOUS…LOVING…HUMBLE…WILLING TO LISTEN…SERVANTS. People need to see Christians who ACT a lot more like CHRIST!!!

¥ - Gay Pride and handing out water… Instead of CONDEMNING them or PICKETTING the parade, they SERVED them.

¥ - Offering free Oil Change, Computer Help, etc… Instead of going around trying to CONVERT they served. These 5 HINDUS visited the Church so confused and curious about why people would do this for FREE.

These are powerful examples of the CHURCH showing this world that we are not FANATICS, but when the GOSPEL is fully lived out there’s LOVE & GRACIOUSNESS.

Dr. Zimmerman has a phrase that he uses often at his church. “Church is not what we do on Sundays. Church is what we do from Monday to Sunday.”

It’s a REDEFINITION of many of our mindset of CHURCH.

Think about the IMPLICATIONS of what this simple phrase means!

Church is not something you GO to. Instead it’s something you DO.

Church is not a PASSIVE thing you ATTEND. Instead it’s an ACTIVE thing you LIVE OUT.

Church is not an EVENT. Instead it’s a LIFESTYLE.

Church is not coming together to ESCAPE. Instead it’s going out to ENGAGE.

Church is not a SOCIAL CLUB. Instead it’s a MISSION.

The PROOF of whether we UNDERSTAND what it means to LIVE IN THE GOSPEL is the degree to which we LIVE OUT THE GOSPEL to those around us.

Church is NOT PRIMARILY about what we do IN HERE. Church is about what we do OUT THERE.

People associate CHRISTIANITY with FANATICS because it’s the Fanatics who GO OUT THERE.

We must go out and show this world what CHRIST REALLY LOOKS LIKE. Through our ACTIONS…through our LOVE…through our GRACIOUSNESS…we need to show a VERY DIFFERENT PICTURE of Jesus, then the one these Fanatics show.

I’ve been thinking about this NEW BUILDING…

I have been here at Renewal for 15˝ years! I have walked through THIS BUILDING for so many Sundays. I have spent MORE TIME in THIS BUILDING then anywhere else since I’ve been here in Philly.

This MOVE is a BIG CHANGE. Renewal will NOT LOOK the SAME. I will miss…

this RED CARPET…

the FIRE HAZARD FURNACE HEATERS…

the TOXIC 3rd FLOOR GUYS BATHROOM…

the HUGE BANNERS that I can’t even understand…

This is a BIG CHANGE!!! And my first thought was “Renewal will BE DIFFERENT!!!”

But when I thought about it some more I realized “But it’s JUST A BUILDING!” RENEWAL doesn’t change just because we are in a DIFFERENT BUILDING. This Building is simply an EXPENSIVE WARDROBE CHANGE.

The TRUE CHANGE that I pray we will see is the PEOPLE OF RENEWAL with a NEW PURPOSE…a NEW UNDERSTANDING OF CHURCH!!!

The CHANGE that will excite me more is to see a CHURCH LIVING OUT THE GOSPEL to those who have CLOSED THE DOOR ON CHRIST.

Christian FANATICS must NOT DEFINE for the world their IMAGE OF JESUS!! If so NO ONE will want to come to know Christ.

WE must go out and DEMONSTRATE through our ACTIONS WHO JESUS TRULY is!!!!

That’s what this UPCOMING cityLIFE Conference is about. It’s a time to CHALLENGE ourselves to discover the PURPOSE of our CHURCH and to see that God has called us to REVEAL HIS GLORY to those who do not know him.
