  • Complete Christianity: The Gospel Worldview Confronts Our Work & Study
Today, we live in a postmodern world where religion is relegated to the strictly private realm of subjective faith and feelings, and is said to have no place in the public realm of the workplace, academia, politics, business, law, education, and art. We’re told, for example, that our Christian faith has no intellectual place in the study of the social and life sciences. Only “objective” reason and analysis is warranted. Is this true? Does God merely belong to our private beliefs? Or does Christianity have a legitimate role to play in the realm of our work and study?

There is a crisis today in how we live as complete Christians in the world. Do you feel a split between your sacred Christian faith and practice, and your “secular” involvement in the world? Have you ever felt that your work and study are inconsequential and temporal, whereas your spiritual life and church activities are what really matter in the end? Have you wrestled with the thought that you can only truly serve God if you’re doing some explicit Christian ministry, like leading Bible study, missions, evangelism, or Christian counseling? That your “secular” career as a teacher, research analyst, medical worker, or lawyer is merely an earthly necessity to make a living and pay the bills? Or in another fallout, do you feel like you have to leave your Christianity at the door when you enter the office or classroom? Do you yourself feel that your faith shouldn’t have anything to do with science, politics, or art?

This class will serve as an introduction to formulating an intellectual Christian worldview that applies to all of life. Certainly, the gospel has to do not only with our personal salvation, but also with engaging the entire world (hence, “worldview”). Though this class will only scratch the surface, the goal is to see the relevance of our spirituality not only in our church involvement, but also in the seemingly secular realms of life. Work, study, and recreation are all done in light of the gospel for the complete Christian.

  • The Kingdom Come: The New Testament Fulfillment in Christ
We all have our favorite New Testament verses and passages, but how do we read the New Testament as more than a collection of memorable quotes? How do we understand each verse and passage in light of its context, and as an astonishing fulfillment of the entire Bible’s story of redemption? How do we understand God’s commands and calling over our lives in a way that is joyous “good news” (gospel) to us, and not dreadful religion?

This class will focus on reading the two main genres of the New Testament, the Gospels and the Epistles, in the way that God has intended. Half the class (four weeks) will be devoted to each genre, interpreting and applying the Word to our lives in Christ through exercises and examples.

Instructors: P. Charles Han, Rev. Dwight Yoo

  • Evangelism and Apologetics: Good News Worth Sharing, Tough Questions Worth Answering
Have you ever had a clear and natural opportunity to tell someone about Jesus, and you didn't? Among the myriad reasons, one important reason why we don't speak is that we simply don't know what to say. How can we communicate the truth of the gospel in a way that's clear, natural, and meaningful to people who don't share our basic convictions about the world? This class aims to help us with this very question. The goals are twofold: 1) to equip us with the basic skills of sharing the gospel with others in a clear, simple, and natural way, 2) to train us to understand a non-Christian worldview so that we can make a meaningful response. We will also seek to answer some basic objections raised against Christianity in today’s postmodern society. Both prayer and practice in different contexts will be regular parts of the class.

  • Gospel Transformation II: Helping Others Change
How am I, a broken, inadequate person myself, able to help another broken person change? We might think it better if God left loving care and counsel in the hands of trained professionals, but that is not his plan. Instead, the true church is redeemed sinners in need of change helping fellow redeemed sinners in need of change. This class provides a biblical, practical understanding of how to be an instrument of true gospel transformation in others’ lives. How do I go about helping others grow in Christ? It requires the specific heart, wisdom, and skills that will be taught. The class is especially recommended for those involved in any kind of one-on-one relational ministry, such as discipleship and counseling.

  • Unlocking the Old Testament Story: Christ the Key
All of us have difficulty making sense of the Old Testament in all its parts. Much of it seems frankly too boring, irrelevant, and inaccessible. How do we read the Old Testament as more than a random collection of antiquated stories, laws, poetry, chronologies, and rituals? How do we apply it to our lives now? This class lays the groundwork for reading the Old Testament as the one overarching biblical story of the redemption of our fallen world. We will seek to understand Jesus’ teaching that the Old Testament is about him (Luke 24.27), exploring how the parts fit together in the mounting drama that culminates in the death and resurrection of Christ. Practically, the class will cover how to read Old Testament Law, the historical narratives, and the Psalms in light of the Gospel Story, and apply it to our lives as our Story.

  • Renewal as a Way of Life: Spirituality of Soul, Work, and Leisure
What does true, vibrant spirituality look like in all of life? Even in the seemingly “secular” activities of your work and leisure? This class seeks to encourage and sustain spiritual vigor in your walk with God, your church life, and your work and leisure. We will learn what it means to delight and satisfy ourselves in God as our supreme Joy – through the spiritual disciplines of the Word, prayer, and rest – in the midst of our noisy, distracting world. As Christian spirituality also involves discovering and exercising our spiritual gifts, you will be able to explore your personal gifting, strengths, and passions through Gallup’s StrengthsFinder® assessment and other tools, that you may thrive according to your design. And lastly, we will learn how to make spiritual renewal a reality in our work, leisure, and culture by developing a “down-to-earth” worldview of the kingdom of heaven.

  • Gospel Transformation I: How People Change
What does it take for true, lasting biblical change to take root in your life? How can you overcome your struggles with fear, anger, suffering, or relationships? If you’ve ever tried, failed, and wondered why, you need How People Change. And before you can help someone else change, you must be changed by the Gospel yourself! This class is a biblical examination of the heart with a Christ-centered understanding of change, based on the CCEF (Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation) model of Gospel transformation. It focuses on the way Christ's past, present, and future grace intersects with and affects how people live their daily lives. This course provides an understanding for the interplay of suffering and other situational factors and how it relates to a person's actions and reactions.
